Review : I just finished what is supposed to be the final season after waiting 3 years, like millions of other Peaky Blinders fans, for it to arrive and all I can say is it was well worth the wait. Among all the great Netflix series this may be the best of all. The acting, casting, characters, scripts, cinematography, pacing, directing, and editing are all outstanding. The story, based loosely on an actual British criminal gang, weaves history and fiction beautifully together as we meet gang leader Thomas Shelby, a complex Jekyll and Hyde figure played brilliantly by Cillian Murphy. Shelby goes from being a decorated World War I veteran suffering from PTSD to becoming only few steps above street thug, to heading a successful criminal gang, to becoming a key member of Parliament having a secret relationship with Winston Churchill while Hitler has risen to power in Germany and gained many strong British supporters in the process, all the while staying in charge of the gang. The Shelby family members including brother Arthur, Aunt Polly, wife Lizzie, sister Ada, nephew Michael Gray, and illegitimate son Duke (added in Season 6), among others, all play key roles throughout the series as do the English gypsy relatives. Tommy's World War I comrades also form a key part of the gang. The best non-family character by far is British Jewish mobster Alfie Solomons, played over the top but very effectively by Tom Hardy. The female characters, without exception, all have strong personas with key parts. Throughout the series we meet U.S. Irish gangsters, Italian mafia, IRA terrorists, crooked police, British aristocrats, and even the (likely fictitious) nymphomaniac matriarch of the Guinness family, who all fit neatly into the story. The sex and violence scenes, while plentiful, are not overly graphic and this works well to keep watchers focused on the story instead of gratuitous distractions. If Season 6 is the final one, it goes out with a thunderous bang (actually two thunderous bangs), and Francis Ford Coppola should be proud to see how the grand finale episode improved his own three near-perfect Godfather movie endings. Here's hoping the producers change their minds and continue the series because all the elements are there for this to go on for another year or two, and even more. I would give this series 10 stars if the ratings system here so allowed.
